Evidence of adverse effects from applying essential oils undiluted to the skin has led many who are educated in aromatherapy practice to not recommend undiluted dermal application, without careful consideration. This practice may not be without harmful reactions, even with what might be considered 'gentle' essential oils, such as tea tree or lavender. As we learn more about the harmful effects from misuse and overuse of essential oils and the process of sensitization, many in the industry take a position against the undiluted ('neat') dermal application, especially with regard to the powerful and toxic essential oils such as oregano and thyme. We at Samara Botane join those who are against the technique called 'raindrop therapy' as performed by Young Living distributors, and agree that it is not a choice as a "best practice." Many of these distributors have not had the advantage of formal training in aromatherapy, and their information comes from the multi-level marketing environment; training usually geared towards sales and business-building. We urge all Young Living distributors (and others using essential oils) to read the paper.
